About
DURUS®
Durus International
Corporation, a Hawaii organization, manufactures and markets high
tech cementitious patching compounds, plasters, cement wash and
surface coatings for both concrete and asphalt pavements. These
products are being used throughout the world in countries such
as Singapore, China, Indonesia, United Kingdom, the mainland U.S.A.,
the Territory of Guam, and Hawaii.
DURUS® High Tech
Cement has been used for over fifteen years, continually demonstrating
unusually high bonding, shear and flexural strengths. In actual
applications, DURUS® High Tech Cement has proven to be more
durable and resistant to abrasion and wear under heavy vehicular
traffic conditions than other known products and has been applied
on roadways, container docks, aircraft parking aprons, parking
garage structures, and other areas that require concrete repair
and new coating.
DURUS® Hich Tech
Cement & Coatings contain a special activated acrylic polymer
used in DURUS® High Tech Cement to provide strength, adhesion
and long term durability in these products.

Wearing Surfaces
The container docks in
Singapore are on suspended structural slabs. The surface of these
slabs take a lot of beating and wear and tear from heavy, rubber-tired
mobile cranes that exert high traction forces on the concrete decks.
Normally, the patching of these decks by conventional means require
saw-cutting and excavation of the top surface of the concrete to
place a patch thick enough to withstand heavy traffic forces. The
patching material is normally an epoxy or polymer concrete. Not
only is it expensive to prepare and install, but the down time element
is a major factor. Furthermore, these conventional materials last
only six to twelve months before repairs become necessary again.
Space on the container docks is at a premium and containers are
stacked seven high in order to preserve space. To shut down any
one area for repair would involve severe interruption of scheduling,
movement of the containers and loss in revenue.
With DURUS® High Tech
Cement, there is no need for saw-cutting or demolition. The areas
to be patched are washed clean and DURUS® is applied directly
on the rough concrete. The thickness of the application can vary
from 1/8” (3 mm) or more and feather edge down to zero. This
product has been laid on the Singapore docks for over five years
and is performing extremely well. It is now the standard material
for patching and repairing dock surfaces at the Singapore port.
Skid
Resistant Surfaces
This product is also used
extensively in coating smooth concrete surfaces to develop frictional
resistance in preventing vehicular skidding. This hazard is particularly
present in aircraft baggage transfer areas where trucks and carts
are exposed to rain. The wet tires tend to skid on the smooth slabs
and collisions due to loss of control of the vehicles occasionally
occur.
To prevent skidding, DURUS®
High Tech Cement has been used successfully to coat baggage transfer
areas of Sinagpore’s Changi International Airport and Honolulu
International Airport.
Concrete pavements at bus
stops in Singapore have also used DURUS® High Tech Cement coatings
to resist wear and prevent skidding.
Levelling
Surfaces
DURUS® High Tech Cement
is also used to fill in low areas where water ponds, as was the
case at Honolulu International Airport’s Interisland Terminal
roadway. DURUS® High Tech Cement is an excellent fill material
for ponding problems as the edges can be feathered from any thickness
down to zero.
At Singapore’s Changi
Airport, ponding of rain water on the aircraft parking aprons often
hinder operations. DURUS® High Tech Cement is used to fill low
areas to effectuate drainage and eliminate standing water.
Surface
Crack Repairs
As a filler for shrinkage
cracks, DURUS® High Tech Cement fully bonds to all contact surfaces
and free edges and provides full restraint against cracking in the
free edges. In addition to filling the existing cracks, the entire
surface immediately above and slightly beyond the crack-filled areas
is coated with a thin 1/8” (3 mm) layer of DURUS® High
Tech Cement to provide a shield along the patched area and develop
total monolithic action between the new patch and the older concrete,
protecting against further cracking or spalling.
At the San Francisco International
Airport, DURUS® is used as a standard method of patching and
refinishing aircraft parking aprons. The patching is needed because
loose slivers of concrete along the cracks tend to get sucked up
by jet engines causing damage to jet engine fan blades. To prevent
these slivers from forming and being sucked up by the jets, the
cracks are repaired with DURUS® High Tech Cement to form a monolithic
surface.
Asphalt
Concrete Coating & Restoration
When DURUS® Asphalt
Armor is applied on asphalt surfaces to protect it from potential
penetration of water. Water seeping through the asphalt concrete
layer can soften the subgrade, which would result in foundation
failure and potholes.
DURUS® Asphalt Cement
will coat and bond to deteriorating asphalt greatly prolonging the
life of the pavement. The cement prevents further unraveling of
the asphalt pavement producing a new and more durable wearing surface.
DURUS® Asphalt Cement is finished with DURUS® Asphalt Armor
for additional protection.
This DURUS® Asphalt
Cement and DURUS® Asphalt Armor treatment was employed successfully
on the helicopter repair pads and taxiways at Kaneohe Marine Corps
Base Hawaii. DURUS® Asphalt Crack Filler is also utilized to
fill asphalt runway cracks at this military base.
DURUS® Asphalt Cement
and DURUS® Asphalt Armor will extend the life of asphalt pavements
with minimum down time required for application.

Plaster Basecoat
In London, the exterior
wall and facade of the Gloucester Hotel was originally surfaced
with a blue mosaic and chestnut brown colored ceramic tiles. Over
time these tiles aged in the weather, resulting in efflorescence
and unsightly stains and some tiles peeling off. The building was
nearly 30 years old and the new owner desired a change in its color
and texture. The proposed conventional treatment of removing the
ceramic tiles, applying the standard cement plaster coat with wire
mesh and painting the surface would have involved considerable nuisance
as the ceramic tile would have to be jack hammered out resulting
in noise, dust and the need to haul away the debris. It would also
cause a partial shut-down of the hotel operation resulting in significant
down-time and loss of revenue.
With the DURUS® method,
the ceramic tile was simply washed clean and coated with a layer
of 1/8” to 1/4” (3 mm to 6 mm) thick DURUS® Plaster
Basecoat. A colored synthetic plaster coating was then applied on
the DURUS® base. By employing the DURUS® method, the conventional
nuisances of noise, dust, and debris removal were eliminated.
This DURUS® method
saved the hotel owners over $3 million and no room nights were lost
as the hotel was in full operation with virtually 100% occupancy
during the resurfacing. The project is now complete and the owners
are extremely pleased with the results.
DURUS®
Cement Wash
DURUS® Cement Wash
is applicable to precast and cast in situ concrete buildings. A
17-story apartment building in Hawaii that was only five years old
had painted surfaces that was peeling off. The ordinary cement wash
basecoat used was not water tight allowing moisture penetrate this
surface which resulted in spalling and deterioration of the cement
wash and paint surface.
As a solution, the existing
paint and cement wash was removed by water blasting and DURUS®
Cement Wash Basecoat was applied to seal the base concrete from
moisture penetration. The DURUS® coating products produce a
long lasting water resistant surface.
